Do I have to play previous games to understand this one?
And if so where can I get them on PC if that's even possible?

Gears of War 1: Ultimate Edition is in the Windows Store
and can be played through Xbox App - but runs a bit like ♥♥♥♥

Gears of War 4 is also there, but ran well for me

2+3+Judgment are not on PC
You can stream them through Xbox Cloud

Never tried it though, not sure if you need a controller or can play with M+KB

You don't need to have played the previous games to enjoy this one.

This is the first Gears game I've played and it's been great and made me want to play the other games afterward.

you get a short introduction in the beginning showing you what happened before. I mean you understand more if you've played the previous ones but I dont think it's required to enjoy the game.

if you look though the settings there is a previous in gears of war recap, but this game has a nice origin story to the locust and there queen, i wont say what though because it will spoil it

Is the story connected with previous games somehow? Is it a direct sequel?

^ tbh yes in some way

not sure how much weight I would put on the importance on the story,
but I try to be vague:

GoW 2+3 continue and conclude the story GoW 1 started

GoW: Judgment is a prequel to GoW 1 with other characters ( I guess optional )

GoW 4 "revives" the "conflict" of GoW 1-3
GoW 5 continues what GoW 4 started
and a potential GoW 6 in the future maybe concludes that - unless they want to keep going.

GoW: E-Day ( coming ~2025 ) takes place 14 years before GoW 1
at "day one" of the "conflict" - featuring two of the original main characters
( I could see E-Day as a potential for a new audience to hop in )

many hoped - and now even more for a remastered collection of GoW 1-4 coming to PC/Steam

A few years ago I bought GoW1: Ultimate & GoW4 on the windows store and played them through the Windows Xbox App.

So I went like:
GoW 1 - Played it first ( ran stuttery, probably poor optimization )
GoW 2 - YouTube Movie Recut ( there are some like 1 or 2 hour long ones for all games )
GoW 3 - YouTube Movie Recut again
GoW: Judgment - YouTube Movie Recut again
GoW 4 - Played it ( ran very well )
Gears 5 - played it a year after release on Steam ( ran generally very well,
but some people seem to have some issues here and there, I only played the story in SP )

I hope that is enough information for you to come to a satisfying conclusion.
