However I did manage to get Gears 5 going. Bit weird how it was resolved though.
I had been meaning to move Gears 5 onto another drive for some time. Eventually I did it tonight even though it would not launch anyway. It might have been better to uninstall it, and re-install it.
However when I moved it, something odd happened. On the drive Gears 5 was installed on, it was 96GB. When I moved it to a new drive, it was only 46GB. For some reason this launched Gears 5 now. However once launched it said only Act 1 was fully installed. Plus would I like to complete downloading while playing. I clicked yes.
For some reason it has not appeared to have downloaded any more. However I do have an option now to update within the Windows store app. Am just about to try that now.
I think it's OK as long as you don't have to update Gears 5 from MS store. Even then I doubt everyone has updating issues, or threads would be full of it. As it is, searching for updating issues only has a few results on google.
Either that or not many folk have gone back for a replay, since Microsoft issued an update.
I got my copy quite early on after release, when it was reduced to half-price. Therefore I was hit with having to update. Only a complete uninstall and re-install would work. Updating the original installation yielded an error.
This was approximately the error message: 'installation is out of date, update and try again'.
I don't have any general problem with buying from other stores. Am rightfully annoyed with this saga with gears 5 not updating, without a full re-install. I think I bought Gears 5 before it came to Steam. Also since I never had any issues with UPLAY or EA Origin, but they get a lot of grief. I figured maybe MS store could be OK, but folks didn't like it because it was not Steam.
It's not like I ever had any memorable issues with games on Steam. Since I only had three games from MS store and this bad issue, it feels off.
I have two choices for Hivebusters. I can either wait until Gears 5 complete with Hivebusters is on sale on Steam. Or I can be an idiot and buy Hivebusters on MS store. Thus ignore my feelings about never wanting to use them again.
Hivebusters never went on sale that I saw on MS store, and is £15. If Gears complete came on sale for £15 on Steam, it's probably the best way to go.
Yeah I got Gears 1 Ultimate and Gears 4 on MS store.
If people have issues with the MS Store and absolutely hate it for whatever reason, thats fine but the below are undisputable facts.
1. Cross platform cloud saving for campaign progress. While your profile stats and unlocks are maintained on XBOX LIVE servers, your campaign progress from Steam will NOT carry over if you login on XBOX. With the MS Store version you can resume where you left off.
2. Hivebusters DLC is free with GPU (Game Pass Ult)... I didn't have to pay for the DLC whereas on Steam you have to buy it to play it. You don't have a choice.
3. Game component installation. The MS Store version has an install manager feature which allows you to choose which portions of the game you want to have installed. If you dont play the campaign anymore you can just completely remove that and continue playing just multiplayer. On Steam you need the entire game content installed at all times.
4. Tech test access.. if you preordered the game on the MS Store, you gained free access to the pre launch multiplayer beta which allowed you to unlock exclusive weapon skins and a banner in the actual game and an exclusive Lancer skin. The Steam version had absolutely no preorder bonus. You paid 60 bucks and got NOTHING.
It's built in to Win 10.
