I have Gears 5 on Xbox Game Pass, would I be able to transfer that data over if I buy a steam version once my game pass is up?

I did exactly this and everything transferred but I had to start the game from the beginning as my progress, about 6 hours, was not copied over even using the same Xbox login details.

All progression is saved on your Xbox account. No matter if you play on Xbox, Win 10 or Steam it's all in one place.

Some people even changed the Xbox account for the Steam version if they have Game Pass so that they can have two copyes ...

They are tallking about the campaign save probably. The progress on your Tour of dutty and your cosmetic unlocks are all on your Xbox account and you cant lose them. The actual save file from your campaign could probably be in a different folder.
