How to tell if the ghosts are "still themself"?

Just finished episode 4 and and lost Erica because of Ernest's ghost.

Usually when I saw any dead one I just walk right pass them, but few days ago I learned that they could give you their personal items as parting gift as long as they are "still themself".

So this time, as Erica, who I grow to like and who was almost finishing ep4 at that moment, decided to talk to Ernest's ghost, since he was murmuring "Where are you Sebastian?" I thought that's the proof that he is "still themself" since he remember that he was looking for Sebastian. But then I know I was wrong and Erica died D:


Anyway, does anyone knows how to tell if the ghosts of the dead ones are still themself?

He probably had other sentences that would betray him, each mechanics get harder as each episode goes. So you maybe had to listen longer etc. Listening to them is the only way I know of to be able to determine if they are still themselves

Yes, what Experimantal said. But I just want to say how jealous I am of you people who get dead characters to come back. The two times it has happened for me it was evil Etienne and evil Erica :(.
