Spells & Free Hands
Do you always need to have a free hand to cast spells, i.e you can't ever have a two handed weapon or a shield equipped to a character you want to cast spells?
Or is there an item/ability later on that will make it possible to not need that 'free hand'?

Thanks

You can cast with a 2h weapon/bow. The game considers you holding it in 1h unless using it.
Battle clerics can have both hands full.
No item or ability later for others. You gotta choose.

If a shield equipped for AC just gotta have other hand free.

Or go into custom settings and disable that requirement. It’s an option.

There is a feat in 5th edition D&D called "War Caster"

It allows you to cast somatic spells with stuff in both hands, among other benefits.

As this feat is not available in the SRD of 5th edition, and thus not available in Solasta, you either have to swap out a weapon/shield, or remove that requirement in the options as you have found
Note also that this is only for spells with somatic components. The vast majority of spells have these in 5E and Solasta (most of the latter are direct lifts from the former, but not all), but there are a few that don't. For example you shouldn't have any trouble casting Hunter's Mark with weapons in both hands.

just in case this is relevant, it SEEMS like you can mark your Diety on the paladin's shield to bypass that need.

The UFB mod has this feat.
