Air elementals are resistant to non magical weapons (they take half damage), thunder and lightning as well.
They are only immune to poison.
Even with non magical weapons and thunder and lightning spells, you're still doing half damage.
Or simply use other spells, like fire, ice, etc.
You decided to play a game you're not familiar with on a harder than normal mode setting in which the enemies have buffed AC, HP, and saves. You should maybe trying playing on default difficulty until you figure out how to play then ramp up the difficulty.
You should learn how the game works first. That will do more to prepare you for playing on the highest difficulty than complaining about getting killed by air elementals.
The highest difficulty is impossible without massive save-scumming (note custom difficulty can be a lot harder than Cataclysm).
3 Air Elementals at level 4 is going to be tough for most parties (at level 5 they would be a piece of cake). Doubly so if you got caught out and left a location without first doing a long rest. At level 4 you may have no magic weapons except for 10 +1 arrows.
Though I still do not have +1 ranged weapons or +1 bolts and arrows. Could not find them even at the factions shops
Most of the good ammunition is crafted. The tower of knowledge has some recipes for different elemental types but the ingredients needed aren't available in the first half of the game. Still the different poisoned ones can really make a difference in a fight. Probably the best ranged weapons are the lightbringer bow which you can get fairly early in the game and the heavy crossbow. There is one faction merchant that does sell +1/+2 ranged weapon I only use her on play through where I don't have an arcane crafter in the party.
Edit: To also add some of the sub classes also have abilities to make normal weapons count as magical for bypassing damage reduction.
I only play on Easy lol
