What the heck is this? Doubles the size of the game!

Maybe a new .exe, especially if crossplay is enabled.

Game looks to be about the same size to me, not quite sure where you're getting this "Doubles the size of the game" from, most big updates are just file replacement/relocation, the game is all done anyway so not sure where you're seeing a 24 gig update from unless they ninja updated on me

Update was 2.7mb on my PC. Game size is still 28.8gb.

The OP must be confusing "Update" with "Install"

Steam updates replace files instead of updating them, and if files are moved around it just downloads them again instead of moving them. Unfortunately the result is that relatively small changes can result in large downloads. Feature of Steam.

It seems this is a real patch because STEAM DB reports a lot of file changes related to DATA and Unity engine: https://steamdb.info/patchnotes/13657322/

Patch is less than 3 MB
*Have you had keep game up to date off and just turned it on or something like that?

Occasionally Steam "forgets" where your game is even though it hasn't moved. This results in the entire game needing to be re-downloaded sometimes, and this can occasionally happen during updates as well. There are times where you'll get lucky and Steam will detect the existing game files and stop the download and just validate the existing files.
