Tough a couple a quests can give you access to magic weapons if you dont turn them in.
So would you recommend that I get friendly with these guys first?
If you want the best heavy armors / plate yes. If you want the best stats/ endgame boosts to attributes atiquarians - those two are best. best weapons come from crafting and random loot. but circle of danotar has vey nice armors.
I heard you can get infinite stat books; is this still the case?
In 1.18 yes for everything except int and wis. Don"t know about 1.22. but they are expensive like 4000 gold per book so if you do everything and don"t grind maybe you can buy like 4X 5x books by the end.
How do I exactly grind in this game? I thought locations you've visited do not generally have re-spawning monsters?
Random encounters. travel slow long distances across the map.
Yikes; and the payoff is enough to off-set rations spent?
yeah generally, but there is a 3RD level ranger and paladin spell that always gives you food i believe...goodberries or whatever.
Depending on party you can cast things like goodberries or create food, there is also a chance of finding food to make rations out of along the way.
