Humans and darkvision
Hey,

do you know how much do darkvision impact the precision on ranged fighters?

I like to play humans (because I’m boring xD) but it feels like that the disadvantage from missing darkvision will drive me crazy and every time the character don’t hit I will put darkvision the blame on xD

Thx

Depends on the campaign, but in the OC you spend quite a bit of time in dungeons and it can get a bit annoying.

There are quite a few light spells though and usually there are torches and other things to ligt up with the sparkle cantrip.
There are also items with the sparkle cantrip and there is a ring with Darkvision.
Plus a few other items spells. So you can get by just fine if you planb for it.

I like to disable dark vision in the game so all my players suffer.

My workarounds are dancing lights and dark vision spell. Someone in you party must have it. Just note that casting it will often start the fight, killing surprise chances.

If you want to go that route, pick a sorcerer who can cast darkvision on two characters for the cost of one. I did that with my first Solasta party which contained two humans. I like the sparkle cantrip too (unlike dancing lights it doesn't bring you out of stealth IIRC) as the game more often than not does provide light sources that can be illuminated with it.

The hardest part will be right at the beginning where there's one fight that is particularly challenging for characters that can't see in the dark.

Unless you have Darkvision on your character (via spell or item), it will be very annoying, almost to the point of crippling at times unless you have some way to throw light down range. Ignoring the advantage/disadvantage mechanic, if you cannot see your target, you certainly cannot shoot it. Light levels are important almost all the time in Solasta.

I started with a human Ranger archer in my main game and very quickly realized I needed to dedicate the second level spell to Darkvision.

On the one hand, I suspect we sort of enjoy the use of light, but on the other, I wonder if it's well balanced.

I was watching one youtuber's guides on the game and he just says he makes only characters with darkvision. You can get around it, but is it well balanced?

Do races without darkvision get enough to compensate? Or is the intent to have them just harder?

In 5e or in Solasta? It probably isn't balanced in the Crown of the Magister campaign, but it's rather situational. In the D&D campaigns that I run, darkvision isn't typically that critical because most of my scenarios are outdoor or urban settings where it only comes into play at night.

Wanted to talk about about this so I don't need to make a post. Darkvision was always supposed to be a strong ability. It is just that a lot of in person games played without it. Lack of darkvision is supposed to be a handicap.

I have an all human party and it isn't too bad, my first play had all dark vision capable races so the humans add a bit more challenge, but in a fun strategic way. From a game design standpoint some would say darkvision is a poor mechanic, 5e may be the first system with a pretty extensive use of it. Now that we have VTTs and video games I think light should matter more again as it is easy to simulate vs pen and paper.
