Detect magic will determine if any of the mundane items in your inventory are magic. All that's required is a single ping from an active detect magic casting and its done. After tagging as a magic item, you can then identify the item.

Simple version is, win battle > loot everything on screen > cast detect magic > open inventory and drop everything that doesn't now show as a magic item (scavengers will loot and sell for you later). Not saying this is how you have to do loot management. Just an example of how it works.

If the game tells you Magic Detected, you have to look at your inventories. Item(s) which are unidentified but magical, will have a "?" in the corner of their inventory icon.

It's a good way to find out what to identify if you are new to the game. After the first playthrough it is easy to tell which items are magical (e.g. "Magnificent Longsword" is definitely magical, and you can even look at the icon or the sell price to infer what it is with enough experience).

Detect Magic will also reveal magic items in containers, like chests, and loot on the ground. It worth casting, ideally as a ritual, after you looted or explored a "room" just to find anything magical that you may have missed.

This spell seems absolutely useless to me. Magic items always say magnificent. So what is the point?

you did not read the 3 posts immediately before yours..did you? If you had, they explain the point.

I did and they don't have a point. You can just look at the description of the item to tell it is magical. As far as finding stuff on the map, there are treasure chest icons on the map telling you exactly where all the treasure is.

Every potion and scroll is magic. No brainer. Items tagged as magic, with a question mark citing a need to be identified, no brainer. Magnificent items are no brainers past the first campaign where you discover what they are. However. I am relatively confident there are cloaks rings and other "wondrous items" that you can't tell are magic until casting detect magic. I reserve the right to be wrong, but my first campaign was wondrous item free (aside from vendor stock) until I started casting detect magic, well over halfway through the campaign. After that I got flooded with them. I've also noticed casting detect magic before hitting the scavenger board is the only time I have ever seen magic items show up in the scavenger loot pool.

Good to know thank you for explaining it.

Personally, yes. No other type of items has descriptors in the name so it's a dead giveaway that you should cast identify on them. The only thing where this doesn't work is magical items/rings vs vendor fodder BUT, and this might be a bit of a cheat, when you autosort your inventory it puts the things that are worth casting identify on underneath the area where it sticks your vendor fodder (again first campaign).

Genuinely unless detect magic causes magic items to spawn in containers before you open them if you cast it there doesn't seem to be a reason for it.

you seriously intend to claim that the very 1st time you played Solasta, and saw "magnificent", you instantly knew it was magic and not just outstanding craftsmanship, or gem studded, ...

Imma call liar.

2nd time I got a magnificent item, actually. It set up that it was a systemic prefix rather than some random name for a random item. An hour or two into the first campaign.

If this is unbelievable for you then... I don't know what to say.

So...the SECOND time you encountered the term, after casting Detect Magic the 1st time.
