New player - Is there a 'must' class to have?
I am unfamiliar with the ruleset and I'm looking for a decent party for my first playthrough. In other similar rpg-s, a rogue(for traps and chests) and cleric (for healing) was almost always a must, is it the same here?

EDIT: one more question - is greenmage good? that's like a druid, right?

No, a rogue can be replaced by someone with high dex with the Lowlife background. And you don't really need a cleric. Healing can be done with short rests and potions.
i am plaing without cleric or paladin - my healer is ranger or healing potion.. duno how on the last level but on hard its enough..you are killing enemys or they are killing you.. i think mage is have - cause this class got spells like jump or levitation - it help to loot places... well you can take jump at your warrior spell blade but still - wizards rulez

thanks! I didn't know about the rogue part, so can I make say a fighter with high dex to spot traps and unlock stuff?

Thinking of paladin, wizard, sun cleric (dps, not healing) and either spell fighter or shadow ranger

You can. My current party has 2 fighters a cleric and wizard. One fighter is a spellblade with high dex and the lowlife background. He has done fine with the chests and traps so far.

Yes, most people replace their rogue with a ranger, but any class with the right background and dex can do it.

There is no must have class in D&D, there never was. Same for this game, now that said there are EASIER ways to play with certain classes.

Since your a new player the only class I would recommend is a cleric of battle, you will get a magic user that can wear armor, use weapons, heal and cast spells with a shield and weapon in hand.
Kinda. You want a wizard, as his spells come often in handy (jump, spiderclimb, counterspell, etc.). Then you should have someone able to deal with traps and locks, unless you don't care about whatever loot is behind them. This doesn't have to be a rogue, you can cover the locks by giving someone in the party with good DEX the Lowlife background during creation, if you really don't want the real thing. Only paladins and clerics can heal, and the latter has the better ones. Clerics have also a lot of other useful spells. You can live without one, but they are handy.

what's the difference between battle and life? I made a life one and he can wear heavy armor/shield too

@Tyrax

Battle clerics get the ability to cast all their spells even if their hands are full (weapon and shield)

Also they get some really good spells from the wizards spell list like fireball and magic missile.

The difference between clerics are mostly their domains and what spells and bonuses they get from there.

ooooh, that explains why my dwarf cleric had most spells grayed out, I thought it was part of the tutorial haha

No worries, it's not that important. There is a trick, you can switch weapons / unequip weapons even in the middle of combat so if you want to cast a spell just switch your weapon set to a set that has 1 hand free or open you inventory and unequip a weapon.

That said I THINK there is a feat you can get at level 4 that lets you cast with your hands full?

Is that a free action? (swapping)

Yes because with somatic components enabled you need a free hand for spell casting. However if you really want to you can also disable the somatic components in game options. So you can use a shield and weapon without worrying about.

Not necessary by any means but always nice to know all options. :)

That or if your feeling a little.. adventurous nothing is stopping you from using two handed weapons with your cleric.
since even though 2 handed weapon use both hands the cleric can take 1 hand of the weapon to cast a spell without any issues.
