But the benefit for something being prone is that melee have an easier time hitting the target so it evens out which is why they get advantage.
Its a fair rule in the 5E rule set learn to live with it. (However if its granting disadvantage to a standing melee player attacking a prone one its a bug and report it)
Still stupid rule but i understand. They wanted to make the game easier but its still complex as ever.
For example in 5E a fighter gets extra attacks when taking the attack action at certain levels but in 5E you can move between each attack and even take a bonus action to do other things such as second wind for a small heal.
But because they felt one of the feats (Shield Master) was too powerful they gimped the feat so it doesn't follow the standard rules as written as it had the ability to use a bonus action shove attack to knock a target prone which grants advantage on melee attack rolls.
A lot of player and DMs ignore this ruling because the feat isn't even in the top tier and it has limitations such as size built into it but the fact that WOTC changed how a core rule of the game is designed because of there dislike of a feats feature is just childish.
