After update my paladin needs a free hand to cast spells?
Im having an issue where my sword n board pali is unable to cast spells due to not having a free hand. Is anyone else having this issue?

No problem. Also, they did put into game's settings an option to change this. So you can turn off spell component requirements if it's too hard to deal with.

Pro-tip: Wielding a 2H weapon, like a greatsword or maul, gets around the Somatic requirement. This is because a person can *hold* a 2H weapon in one hand even though they need two hands to strike with it. This is something that actually came from J. Crawford himself.

To be honest this is the most stupid quality of life decision they have made and I am sure it must be a bug. Being able to use a hand is enough you do not need to manually put away your weapon. Yes that maybe how it is written in the D&D rules but I have been role playing for over 35 yeas and I can not remember anyone forcing players to do this. Yes if they are bound or paralysed but to just cast a spell with a weapon in hand!

It's also a balancing mechanic since, now, a wizard can cast spells in full plate if he is proficient with it.

Too be honest, there should be a separate option to turn off this. I felt like cheating when I saw other difficulty setting...

Are they going to add the warcaster feat then? Because this really hits clerics and Paladins quite hard.

There is.

Unfortunately, you can not turn off somatic requirements on a per character basis. If you want to use them, then your Paladin is basically forced to use a two handed weapon. 5e rule or not, I don't think that is a good trade off. What you gain is a minor bit of "realism" at the expense of the paladin choosing S&B or 2-handed. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

But that would affect all characters, right? Not just the paladin?

Yes. Clerics have a domain that actually by passes it. Maybe they should add that to PALLY somewhere.

Yeah I am restarting my cataclysm playthrough with a battle cleric instead of a life cleric, if they implement war caster I will likely go back to life, but as it stands it is much better to just take the heavy armor feat at 4 with a battle cleric (who already has good abilities and a quite strong spell list). It really sucks on paladins though as it makes casting divine favor and heroism much more dangerous.

I 2h with Pally so its not a big deal for me. But I understand your pain.
At least they gave us a setting to turn it off. Sucks its not for single PCs but at least its there.

Lucky Battle cleric is good.

Yeah I usually take a Two Handed Sword Paladin so it didn't affect me.

On the lighter side, the New Two Handed Sword feat "Followup Strike" makes Two Handed Weapons pretty nasty now.

ESPECIALLY for a Paladin because you get to make a Smite on Followup as well. So you can Smite 3 times in a row now.

Also this Change does balance out Wizards and Hybrid Wizards now. You used to be able to go out and cast a spell, then strike a second time with your off hand. You can only do that every other round now.

i found a merchant that was selling all kinds of spell attunments for casting spells. there was a crown, a cloak. a belt. and like 5 others, that will all let you cast spells.

Sure but they do not let you cast a spell with your shield out.

I mean I think this is a good change and faithful to RAW, but if they are going to implement RAW they need to do so completely and include the feat tax so Clerics, Pallys and Gish shield users are playable. As it stands now Battle clerics are just substantially superior to every other domain in a mechanical sense and makes gish shield users worthless. Pally's are still good with sword and board but now a lot of their spell slots are going to be used for smites vs spells which are going to be relegated to out of combat healing and buffing.

(Lol if you can't tell I am SUPER thirsty for War the Caster feat which I would often take on my non-shield using spellcasters in my PnP games).
