After update my paladin needs a free hand to cast spells?
Im having an issue where my sword n board pali is unable to cast spells due to not having a free hand. Is anyone else having this issue?

No problem. Also, they did put into game's settings an option to change this. So you can turn off spell component requirements if it's too hard to deal with.

Pro-tip: Wielding a 2H weapon, like a greatsword or maul, gets around the Somatic requirement. This is because a person can *hold* a 2H weapon in one hand even though they need two hands to strike with it. This is something that actually came from J. Crawford himself.

That's how the core rules are. Somatic components require you to have a free hand to make the hand gestures to cast the spell. Most DM's kinda ignore it. But that's why feats like War Caster exist.

Thanks for the response, it wasn't implemented in the previous version so was a tad lost when I made a new game.

Your a star! Thanks for that info. You have saved me a few hours replaying with a new party up to this point :D still I may still do that now you have informed me about the 2-handed mechanics.

As an actual sword fighter, can confirm that it's easy to hold two handed weapons in one hand and gesture.

It's interesting that they made spell focus/component pouches/holy symbols for various slots. But no option to paint your shield as a holy symbol. I let my players do that, but I will have to start enforcing the free hand thing for somatic stuff.

I tend to agree, we allowed for such in our home brew game where our paladins focus was engraved into his shield.

To be honest this is the most stupid quality of life decision they have made and I am sure it must be a bug. Being able to use a hand is enough you do not need to manually put away your weapon. Yes that maybe how it is written in the D&D rules but I have been role playing for over 35 yeas and I can not remember anyone forcing players to do this. Yes if they are bound or paralysed but to just cast a spell with a weapon in hand!

Because DM's want to make the game simple so they never really enforce it but this is a video game so it's a thing, isn't there an option to shut it off? Just use that and be done with it, if they cater to every single whim and request the full game will never get done.

Has it ever been implemented in any other d&d game? Nope I am sure this must be a bug, the official rule in d&d is about having access to a free hand (was clarified in errata). This as a rule is a very odd whim that does nothing to help the game.
