Dark Veils is apparently done as an innate ability rather then a spell, so can't be countered the way normal spells can. Daylight and similar things can't counter it, but will still be effective in areas outside the dark veil area of effect where the light reaches. (So don't try casting Daylight on top of Dark Veil, cast somewhere else so that when moving out of the Dark Veil area you'll be in the Daylight area of effect. Planer grid targeting can be useful there. I used Channel Divinity: Indomitable Light and centered it on empty air so it covered the side of the room the enemy was on. When they used Dark Veil, and I had two characters in melee range, I moved them back. The enemy followed them out into the light, and the Dark Veil became irrelevant for the rest of the fight.)
As recommended by Edrick, I disengaged whenever the enemy would cast Dark Veil and moved to an area with Daylight to impose disadvantages on my opponents when they followed.
Wind wall was the key to winning for me, thanks for the tip. Counterspell should work on Darkness tbh but yeah...
If you can win the dialogue and then surround her with 3 heroes (4th triggering the fight) she is absolutely manageable at lvl5. However she kinda likes to stay in Darkness and cast from afar (Slow or leeching her ghouls) so just moving everyone out is not a guarantee that she will follow immediately. Meaning she can do 3 moves per round, heal herself like crazy etc.
So Wind wall is definitely cool here.
Yes that makes no sense. Not only it dispel and overwrite daylight, but also you cannot counter it, you cannot overwrite it with another daylight. There is a reason there is so such ability few of those in 5e balance...
So rather than good boss mechanic, you punish player with an non-counter-able not dispel-able innate. I had forgotten the infuriating aspect of this game. Pretending lightning count, but then when the player is ready for it, the dev cheat and at a LOW cost : that dark veil is apparently only 1 or 2 legendary action.
Now I remember why I prefer the workshop story rather than the main.
