Caer Lem: Brimstone Vipers and Burning Hands
My Sorcerer standing on an elevated position is swarmed by those flying pests and he can't seem to hit them with burning hands, the cone spell. Is that me doing it wrong, or the game that can't handle flying units, or the ruleset or something?

So the cone shaped spells can target flying enemies, though the targeting is a little clunky I feel. I've noticed that the cone wants to kind of snap to the ground tiles, so try lining up the tiles they are flying above and then lifting the cone up to where it covers them.

The game does have trouble aiming at things on a higher level than the caster. Lighting Bolt and Fireball have the same issue. What is sometimes easier is rather than trying to highlight the flying unit itself, mouse over the portrait at the top in the initiative line. As you mouse over the portraits, the unit will highlight on the map so you can make sure you're choosing the right one.

There is a toggle that you can change the camera from one mode to the other. If you are having trouble lining things up with flying enemies try changing the mode. What I do with those flying flappy pests is to ready an action like shocking grasp. When they come in to attack they get zapped which disrupts their disengage so they will be in range at that point. I also like to do this with melee who aren't very good with a ranged weapon, they almost always hit on the attack of opportunity.
