Loremaster is good for skill checks, though I am not exactly sure if the extra specializations yet apply if you already have specilizations in the skill. Imho, it should.
You can fail at adding spells to your spellbook. The lore master gets advantage to those checks. I'd rather have more spells to choose from than getting a slightly larger punch out of the ones I do know.
Either way, the character is a wizard, the most OP class in almost any RPG game. I made my wizard a lore master and the fireball is still as potent as ever. It completely wasted 4 enemies and heavily injured two others with just one blast. It's that good.
That said, all of the wizard subclasses are amazing. It's one class I'm happy they didn't get to use the WotC subclasses. :)
