All mage must have the material pouch equiped in the potion slot to cast spells?

ill bump this, ive been meaning to fiddle around with it but havent gotten round to it yet, does anyone known?? since it occupies the object slot it feels like a nice way to give a lil bump to non-caster classes (since casters are usually much more powerful in 5e)

I've seen other magic foci. There's also and orb and a wand.
I have a Magic Missile wand as a focus.

No just to cast ritual versions of spells (costs no slot, takes 10 minutes, spell must have that possibility).

loved to get this confirmed by devs as working as intended or in development!!

so you need the pouch/foci equipped for rituals but not for spells with material components??
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

at char gen you can switch for a orb or wand, does the same thing but is lighter by 1 lbs.

ok.. but it is a major pain to keep switching this out manually. I understand for emmersion but not fair to the mage class that has weapon swamp options and the downside not being able to quaf a potion of healing during battle:steamfacepalm:

You can still go in the Inventory to drink one, but you sacrifice an action

This seems to be a pretty bizarre decision to tell the the squishest character who relies on spells that "you can cast spells, or have a potion to drink, but not both". It should be changed.

If you don't actually need the pouch equipped, that should at least be made clearer.

I don't see any reason why the component pouch needs to be in the quick slot at all.

Some MAgic staves also count as Foci, Staff of fire for example.

as a 5e pnp player its quite the opposite, the point of spellcasters is they are extremely good because of spells like hold person, magic missile, etc. so further checking them by denying their quick slot is not as harsh as you might think imo

You can still cast spells, just not the ritual version (takes 10 mins, does not consume spell slot) of them without the pouch or other focus equipped. Ritual is so situational (I've only ever used it out of combat so far anyway), that it's not a big deal to swap out potion/pouch as needed. Also, as others have stated, some staves count as a casting focus so it becomes irrelevant anyway.

*Edit* Hrmm so I just double checked...the ritual option is still available when I unequip the pouch and I have no other focus equipped. Not sure now.

You need nothing to use rituals at the moment. The pouch has no actual function. I have only a wand of lightning bolts equipped and can still do ritual spells.

How many ritual spells do you use in combat normally?

The wand counts as a focus, just like the pouch does.
