Refining shards of enchantment

I understand th eprocess of refining and upgrading enchantments and runestones, but I've recently gotten 4 shards of enchantment. I can't add refining points to them so the chance of upgrading them is 1%. Am I missing a step?

the step you are missing is to buy 1000 zen for 10 Euro (almost the price of other mmos subscriptions)
then you convert the zen into 150000 astral diamonds and buy a "coalescent ward" on the auction house which is an item that you need for every 100% safe upgrade and i never found a single one in 400 hours playtime...
or you can chose the free2play way and go with 1% success and 99% rate your shards will break on fail :D

Orrrr you could go the grindy route (which I guess you may know now) and buy a Ward off other players for AD on the auction house.

Also, saving up several days of prayers gives you a box which may contain a Ward.

What do you mean by this? In the description for the Coffer of Wrondrous Augmentation, the description says "contains an enchantment and OFTEN times a ward."
So what are you saying? That often really means %1?

I usually buy the Blessed Professions pack and got the Cache of Sharandar twice but I was saving up for the Coffer this week and I don't want to waste all those points. This discussion answered most of my questions but I'm still wondering about this. Thanks guys.

I think the term "often" is using the regular wards as reference, which pop from coffers much more regularly.

Another way to get coalescent wards: if you open lockboxes, then you build up trade bars. Don't ever trade those in for anything other than coalescent wards, which you get for 200.
