Neverwinter

Neverwinter

Why the hate?
I mentioned in an earlier thread that as a big fan of Neverwinter Nights I confess I only regarded this MMO with half an eye over the years, but my interest piqued once I heard of the introduction of a bard class. With customizable songs no less!

So I did my research, and... man there are a lot of nay-sayers out there against Neverwinter. Thinking it might be a case of the smaller minority with the louder voices, I dl the game and started playing.

I think the environment is rich, the combat is slick to look at, of course the lore is replete with D&D tropes (in a good way) and gameplay was more than just a nod to NWN2 nostalgia as I went about doing my thing and playing my part as a rogue. In fact, I was wondering how much fun it might be to join a guild and pursue my heavier RP predilections, which I admit is mostly why I play these games, less hack-and-slash.

Maybe I simply do well separating my gaming requirements against a pay wall discipline, meaning I don't see myself throwing gobs of money just to get gud or look sexy. But I am just not seeing any evidence of false advertising, like some of the claims I've read, that it is "not F2P". Looks free to me? Maybe it depends on how you want to play the game? So far I am thinking that the gaming community is better having Neverwinter than not.

Neverwinter was a good game in their early years... But they changed A LOT and when I mean A LOT I mean monetary speaking, they removed basic things that you could do for free (like upgrade companions by leveling up) to straight up selling them.

They removed the custom quests (I forgot the actual name) which was something that let people create their own quests and share IN-GAME so others could access it.

Also, again, many of the things you could do for free, they put a pay-wall in the front of it. Another example was the easy way to get rough astral diamonds by simply praying and they changed it to make it more dificult to get it, so the easiest way now is by paying for it.

Many of the changes were not welcome by the comunity, so now the game looks like a very generic free to play mmo with nothing new to offer (aside this new class ofc).

Well it's kinda odd, they removed most of the easy ways to get AD due to bots. Salvaging, praying even the daily bonus turned into account wide rather than alt, theres no gates so theres nothing stopping the wide numerous accounts. (Though that still didn't stop them from amassing so much ad)

As for the Foundry, yeah they had no idea how to work it anymore , it was always down and only a select few actively did it since they removed most of the rewards and nerfed the drops (or made them harder to obtain) I for one liked the ravenloft inspired ones but spending 20+ minutes just for an low level item bag? Thanks but no thanks

I believed they also removed the do X foundry dungeons for RAD as well before it was taken down or they didn't. It's been awhile but I clearly remember the rewards didn't match the amount of time you spent doing them at the end of its life

Oh man! I've totally forgot about the bots!
Yeah I remember now how many of them just stayed at the city praying (even today some still do that).
Bots was a very bad deal that happened to this game, remember the ammount of bots offering astral diamonds? I really liked how they at least tried their best to fight against them. When the "block user from send pms" was finally release, I got a little relieved.

That was such a loss... I really liked that system, there were really good quest and for those who didn't want to wait a lot there were a plenty of quests helping to level up and even get some gold and items.
I got really frustrated when I came back and discovered they'd removed it from the game.

Well, not having to level up companions isn't that bad, considering you can now trade in Companion Experience Treatise for AD in Protectors Enclave, and it's now easier to switch from one companion to another too, they're ready for action right away.
And while on the one hand companion prices on the Auction House have increased a lot, on the other hand a returning player might find some hidden treasures (very rare companions) in his bank, and be able to sell them for several millions AD each...

I think that removing the Foundry was a wrong decision too, they could have turned it into an endless stream of content for the game created by players for players with a bit of work.

And i'm not sure what "pay wall" you're talking about regarding rough AD, you can still get that without having to pay anything from Random Dungeon/Skirmish Queue runs, weekly campaign quests or campaign stores for campaign currency and so on and so forth. Most players have no problem with reaching their 100k daily limit very quickly these days.

Gearing up is also easier now, and it will become even better for new and returning players with Mod 21.

Anyway, play the game for fun, join a decent guild and you'll see that you don't have to pay for anything aside from perhaps ViP (the perks are really nice to have) every now and then.

Now see, that is a legitimate criticism. I did not know the Foundry was removed from the game altogether and I can see why that would be upsetting.

And I am quite familiar with paywall MMOs but I just never let it get to me. I ignore the carrot and pursue gameplay until I get what I (think I) need or I simply ignore it outright. That said, I am hearing that, with the drop to level 20 on the horizon, several long paying customers feel a bit duped, in that with the new baseline the fancy goods purchased over the years will have reduced returns.

The devs are corrupt how much more obvious can this be? Holy crap some of you are in complete denial just look at the companies history with other games cash grabs on big ips.

Many fell for the old bait and switch take of as a lesson especially with mmorpgs.
