I will contradict what most people are saying. Do not worry so much about what your friend is going to play. It is not really fair to skip a class just because your friend decided they wanted to play it. If you both end up as the Hunter Ranger class then... well you both end up playing that class. Leveling up is stupid easy solo, with a leveling buddy it is that much easier.
Your gaming style is however importiant. You already said you wanted high damage which means you are best with a DPS class/build. Trickster Rogues, Control Wizards, Scourge Warlocks, Great Weapon Fighters, and Hunter Rangers are generally DPS classes. I already mentioned that Hunter Ranger is the only class to use a bow (and I will admit they are fun). However Scourge Warlocks were (last I read) currently highest DPS. Both classes are fairly easy to use from what I have played of them.
My main is a Guardian Fighter (generally the tank class) and I can say that I enjoy playing that class. My first character was actually a Devoted Cleric then a Trickster Rogue. If my Guardian Fighter was not already 60 I would probably enjoy the Hunter Ranger more. (Though I am enjoying the Scourge Warlock a great deal).
