augment of your choice as active companion, an epic one if you can afford it, but a rare one will do just fine for now too. Then get 4 more (epic or rare depending on how much AD you have) of the same category to boost it. Beyond the % boost any "normal" companion is rather useless during fights for a very few exceptions, but those cost several million AD a piece - Alpha Compy and Xuna for example.
Abyssal Chicken might be worth getting, pretty cheap for an epic companion atm., and some say that it can deliver decent damage in a fight.
Anyway, in a few days they'll release a new module, so you might want to wait for that before spending any bigger amounts of AD on something...
The only thing I've found I've had to do with him is unlock his final 5 levels to get him to lvl 30.
On one hand you want a good summoned companion, and on the other hand you want a set of 5 companions to fill your offense/defense/utility slots.
As for the summoned companion, you have two options, either an augment or a regular one.
Now, different classes have different combinations of offensive, defensive and utility slots, but each companion can provide a "power" for one of those slots - however, which companions you want to get really depends on your role (healer, tank or dps).
For example, I am a cleric. For a "healer" loadout, I am mostly using companions with an "outgoing heal" bonus, but for my dps loadout I focus on companions with a "crit severity" bonus, except that I have an Energon in my utility slot for a fairly massive HP boost.
The important point is that there is no single set of companions that is "best" for everyone - you need to select companions that fit your role, and boost whatever you are missing.
A note about the abyssal chicken - there is a lot of it around because it is so easy to get from the current event - one hour of play and you will have enough Renown to buy one.
