Newbie questions
So, after the helpful responses here I bit the bullet and bought the game - about 30 mins in so far and really enjoying it. Can anyone recommend a helpful newbie guide? I did a bit of searching but haven't found anything too helpful yet.

In particular, keen to know what you should consider when keeping vs releasing fish etc - does releasing give particular benefits (like in UF1 where it awards more XP).
Anything about the quests, stars etc that it would be handy to know?

What do you consider the "must know" tips to help a new player get quickly up to speed?

Cheers.

letting go of "protected species" gives you more XP, letting go of normal species gives you nothing

Great, thanks both

Check out the videos on youtube by KP Shamino, Mdawg and Mista, you'll pick up loads of good tips doing that.

Some of the videos may be old, BUT they still work

1. The game sets the friction setting of the reel. you never have to touch the mousewheel.
2. Do not repair your equip until it broke or you lost at least 90% of durability.
3. You can "recast" your bait to the same location where it landed before. You have to cast, after you got your bait out of the water or catched a fish, while holding the Rod in your hand, press T and the game will cast it for you.

4. If you don't understand something, ask the community.

5. When a fish is too strong and it "spools" you, you can't lose your Equipment. Only Exception are Stick Rods.
6. The EXP and S income scales with Map Level.
7. "Premium" a.k.a. VIP is worth the money, compared to "the other game"
8. You don't have to spend any money, after purchasing the game, but you can.
9. I wouldn't recommend buying the high end Equip for $/€ IF you prefer to unlock your equipment and like progress.
10. If you are a person who sas "I don't care about progression" the Value of the "high End" $/€ Equip is way better than "in the other game".
11. $/€ Equip is not the strongest in the game, but some of it has superior EXP boni.
12. You will "unlock" new Equip with new maps. Some parts of the Equip can only be bought at some maps.
13. The 18kg (strongest) Fly Rod can be purchased in Italy
14. The "best" line for small fish is sold in Poland. 7kg and 0,08mm. Even the 1,5kg leader is thicker.
15. Save money for 3x 18kg Feeder Rods, you can keep and usethem forever.
15.a. When you got the 3 Feeder Sets try to save money for a big fishing net 100-150kg. It's may get annoying when you have to sell too often.
16. Skip the 25kg Equip and buy the 30kg, because you can use the 30kg Reels for Feeder Rods, Spinning Rods and Match Rods.
17. When you got the 18kg Equip buy the Reels first. Rods afterwards.
18. At Finnland you should have at least 2x 30kg Spinning Sets.
19. My progress was 3x 18kg Feeder Sets, 1 29kg Reel, 1 30kg Fedder Rod, 1x 30 kg Spinning Rod, afterwards 29kg Reel, 30kg Feeder Rod, the last 29kg Reel, than the third Feeder Rod. Afterwards the second 30kg Spinning Rod.
20. Have fun. ^^

That would be my Beginner Tips.

Good community in this game all your questions get answered and as the above posts have said you tube is a good resource, the game itself is lacking in in game info just the basics but most of it is obvious it rewards moving around for your prey and progression is swift you get your first boat on lvl 2 they are free. Its a very good game.

Don't hesitate to ask questions in the in-game chat. The community is helpful and more often than not someone will answer you in-game with the question you have.

Always do your dailies.

Don't be in too much of a rush to get to high level lakes. Enjoy where you are currently and try to "complete" a lake if you can. What I mean with "complete" is catching at least 1 of each species at the lake. This will award you with the lake trophy. This is important because when you have a lake's trophy it unlocks higher level quests for said lake that gives better rewards.

Thanks - exactly what I am trying to do - just picked up a selection of baits and wandering about casting in spots i like the look of. Got spooled this morning by something big, and was then thrilled to land an 8lb carp on my starter gear after a long fight. Having great fun! Only a few more species to catch including the bleak which I thought would be the easiest of the lot.

Are you still at Bellarus ?
The best for Bleak is flies on 0 hook on a float at 30cm. But if you are at Bellarus you don't have access to flies yet. You can use bloodworms.
Try on the far left with the bloodworms on 0 with 30 - 60cm float.
