1) Some people (like me) hate when their rods are sticking out in all directions and different spacing. The rod pods put your rods perfectly next to eachother with the exact same space between them.
2) Ease of use. When not using a rod pod, you are sometimes not close enough to a rod when wanting to pick it up with 1, 2 or 3 depending on how you put them down. When using a rodpod, all 3 can always be picked up easily as long as you are close to the rodpod itself.
So just like in real life, you don't need a rod pod. But it does make everything just a little smoother :)
I don't like the Rod POD at all. Because all Rods are way too close to eachother. Use 3 bronze bells and sometimes you don't even know which rod got a bite.
You have to stay near the Pod, to pick up the rods. With single Rod placement the distance is "wider" and you don't have to stand right behind the damn POD.
It has 1 advantage. It seems you can pick up the Rods way faster, which makes it easier to fish with Stick Rods.

You don't have to use buy and use it. Personally though i have used mine constantly since it came out :)
