As concerns tokens - they're required to buy top gear & lure/baits since spring
I only need ~50.000 silver more and 15 tokens. I expect to reach my goal within the next week or two depending on how much time i have to play.
Ofcourse it also depends where you are in the game (level, gear and knowledge), but overall it is easy to make money for everyone.
There isn't much grear to buy in the game, at moment. When you got the 30kg Sets for ground, Float and Spinn fishing, almost everything better ist "nice to have".
While fishing in Finnland my average income (with VIP) is at least 2000 S/hour and 35k-45k EXP.
Daytime: Red and Blue Deep Rail, and drive round the middle Island.
Nighttime: Throw some bait fish to 152:244.
At moment that seems to be one of the best ways to get alot of S and EXP.
Beside that:
The most expensive Reel you can buy is the 57kg Casting Reel for 86k S. At 2k S/hr you have to play 43 hrs to get one.
In the "other game", the strongest Casting Reel costs 60.000 S and for good players, who doesn't use "gold Baits", the average income ist at 120-150 s/hr. Which means you have to play "the other game" for ~ 400 hrs to get something similar.

You can get pretty much the same income and xp fishing carp in france. And you can get not-quite-as-good but very decent income fishing carp in germany as well.
But those are just some of the options on how to earn money. There are lots more, and they span a lot of maps. You "just" have to
a) figure out what you can reliable catch that provides decent money/xp for your time spent
b) figure out what you like fishing the most
c) find one or more maps/spots that fits a and b
Regarding gear that requires tokens:
These are generally only required for high end gear or lures, which fit the "nice-to-have" category rather than the must-have. Although i personally would prefer no tokens to be required, this also gives players a nice incentive to do something different and set long term goals to get this exclusive gear (that isn't needed to play succesfully).
Beside that: As long as a Boat is available, the friction of your Reels isn't that important. There were only 3 Fishes I werent able to catch "fast", since I started to play the game. 400 hrs played and 18500 Fish cought, until now.
Power seems to be more Important than Friction.
For "standard" Reels the max Power is 16kg. The first reel with 16kg of Power has 23kg Friction. Even the 45kg Reel still has 16kg Power.
The strongest "multiplicator" Reel for Cast Fishing has a Power of 30kg and a Friction of 57kg. But because Power seems to be more important than friction you don't need the 58kg Rod, which costs 120k S. The 38kg Rod for 32k Silver is more than enough. ^^
Changing from "Standard" Reels (16kg) to "Multiplicator" Reels for spinn fishing is the last noticeable upgrade to your gear.
That may change later, if we get some big lakes without a Boat. Or some wide and open Areas without a coast.

Also very enables you to go from chasing large fish (but not as strong as sturgeon) to comfortably fight and land them easily through pumping.
