Nothing works. I'd like to fix it, and then maybe I'd write a guide addressing all problems. After all this is one of my favourite childhood games. It sucks to see it being a wasted purchase for many people.
I am a bit disapointed in how the devs did not reply to this thread even after a few days has passes since it was posted, but thankfully it was fixed. and I hope this can help someone in the future who is having an issue.
How will you go about this? Will you be working with The Asenheim Project? Looking forward to any updates. In the meantime I'll try to get it running on my end because I'm not having the same amount of joy as the OP.
However, I found a way to get the game to run properly!
Anyone having trouble might want to try looking into installing a virtual machine such as Oracle VirtualBox. On a VM, you can host an older OS (like Windows XP, which works for me) and play older games like this one. Once the host OS and guest additions are installed, you can just drag and drop the game folder into the VM itself, and the game should run.
If anyone else finds a fix for this display problem, please let me know---I'd like to be able to run the game directly on Windows 10 if possible, but until then I'll be using this workaround.
Yes, a VM would work. It's a good solution for people who are willing to put in the effort. Unfortunately, getting the image files for Windows 95/98/XP is legally grey at best. I think many owners of this game had already played it long ago and bought the game to play it on Steam. By taking it from Steam and into a VM it will no longer run as a Steam game. The same as getting it from an abandonware site, then.
Thanks for posting that anyway as I'm sure it'll help some people. Personally I don't like having to jump through those hoops and just play True Love at The Asenheim Project. I can look past the minor differences between the original and the browser engine re-write.
