Does the archivist permanently delete your file for real?

I chose a file not that important luckily but I did not play it nevertheless. Does he really permantly delete from you hdd it if the card dies? How and when did I give this game the permission to do that??

It's a joke. It won't delete your files.

There's a steam achievement and a line of dialogue if you lose the file in the game and then delete it yourself. You also get a fun thing if the file you choose is an image.
