It can happen once or twice when you are doing a bit too good in the tutorial because it feels compelled to teach you the death/bone mechanics. It is meant to kill you, but it is also actually possible to beat. Sadly, you don't really get anything for doing so, but hey his eyes stay angry red the rest of the run which is kind of neat. Easiest method to beat it is to have something like the scissors or possibly the hourglass on hand, clear a lane for a hard hitter (5+ damage in this case), and steamroll the victory before the bears ever get the chance to attack at all.
You have the stinkbug, you have the knife (and used it at least once), you have the Bone system, you've met the Woodcarver...
All that and you're 6 runs in, and only JUST now got to Angler's second phase? Where you got hit with The 8 Friggin' Bears?
If so, that's kind of wack. I'd expect that by 6 runs and that amount of progress, the game should stop hitting you with grizzlies at the second phases of bosses.
I took about 6 runs to beat Act 1 as well, I think (I had only 2 runs with the Woodcarver showing up, at least, and it was my first run seeing a Mycologist), so your situation just feels weird.
If the game really is hardcoded that way, you're going to get hit with one more grizzly wall at the next boss and then you're home free.
(Sidebar, this helps make the Man In The Cabin all the more hateable. Roll with it and seek your revenge for his obvious cheating. :P )
And yes i did use the knife when i was almost dead just to see what it did.
After you come back you'll see the same fight have no bearwall.
It's annoying but it really doesn't matter because you can learn to steamroll the entire game after it.
Sorry if you already did this as well but if you win the battle after using the knife Leshy should offer you a box of eyes to replace your old one, there is a special eye that you want to take to progress the story (it should be obvious which one is different). This helps with the clock puzzle.
You should probably solve the clock puzzle then. Try to select different eyes after you have used the knife.
