If you want items to help the fight I'd recommend bringing the scissors or a knife to clear one of the lanes and if you have a +5 damage card it wins the fight.
That's the fun of it. The hydras are very much the second/third map thing, yes. You should build the deck as either Mantis or Blood for the first boss and choose your items accordingly (clock, scissors, you know the drill). Naturally you will get incredibly unlucky with card choices now and then but you don't have to venture too far to know you can't win the run, so it's fine. You're welcome! There's a lot of game in the Egg deck. They really should consider unleashing a workshop for the game or doing small monthly dlc's (a new deck and/or challenge for KM).
