In Windows, right-click the speaker icon in the lower right and select Sound Settings. There you can select which device to use for sound, like speakers, headset, controller speaker or other sound devices you have connected.
My PC is also automatically selecting the controller output whenever I connect the DualSense, so then I have to select headset (or speakers) again from the Windows Sound Settings.
The sound settings in game, where you select headset, surround, stereo speakers etc is just to specify how the sound is generated before it's sent to your selected device in Windows.

Ah, it was a game sound option for dualsense speakers working when I had it set to off. turned off the pc, had a sleep, came back and it fixed itself. thanks for your suggestion!
