fps/performance degradation fixes?
been tinkering with the game for the past week due to its weird performance.

usually i can get a decent 70-80 fps with everything maxed out at 1080p, but as i continue to play the game my fps slowly drops. it took me a while to realize that this wasn't tied to what was happening in game. i thought i had just walked into a heavy load area, but once i restart the game and load back into that same area its back at 70-80 fps. its pretty consistent, happens every time i play. i would say usually the game starts slowing down after 30 to 60 mins of playing.

its not the end of the world, since restarting usually resolves it, but are there any fixes for this issue, anyone else dealing with this?

no, i have it on a SSD. i do have "HDD Mode" enabled in the gameplay settings though. some threads said it can help loading even on a SSD.

Hmm, odd, I vaguely remember there was something that causes this, maybe the RAM? I can't remember but I do recall something caused this. I wish I could remember so I could help.

whelp. if you remember, let me know

Setting textures to medium fixed this for me. Not sure if it was worth it however

HDD mode enabled causes less variety in NPCs and the way they get streamed, also cutscenes can have loading screens then.

In your case i would deactivate HDD mode.

Also crowd density can cause your drops. When you are in different city parts there are different densities of NPCs, also depending on the day time.

When you stay at one spot for 1-2 minutes, more and more NPCs around you will spawn. That may causwe the fps degrade. When you load a quicksave less NPCs are spawned in, they get more after time.

So id say deactivate HDD mode and set crowd density on medium.

Components of pc get hot over 1h full load.

Increase your fan speed to full,.might get more than 1 h.

This solved the issue for me as well (low fps after playing for some time like OP mentions).

I suspect it's related to VRAM. Using GPU Tweak III monitor, I noticed that the game quite quickly used all available 8 GB VRAM, and that's when it started to drop fps and become sluggish. Also when going into the map and in the different menus, and going back out, it sometimes dropped to 5-10 fps for a few seconds. Very annoying.

Using medium textures completely got rid of the problem, and VRAM usage now never exceeds 7800 MB.

I noticed a little bit difference in close-up texture quality at first (slightly less sharp), but quickly got used to it, and everything further away than a few cm still looks the same.

In addition, I can now turn up all other settings, use full ray tracing on Psycho (minus sun shadows as they're messed and glitches / flashes when ray traced), DLSS quality with sharpness 1. Everything looks fantastic, and no more slowdowns.

Running steadily at 60 fps (locked in Nvidia control panel) in 1440p.

Can also recommend setting crowd density to low with that CPU.

My specs in profile, if curious, but basics are RTX 3070 Ti (8 GB) and Ryzen 5 5600X, 32 GB RAM.

I noticed it helps to fast travel every once in a while. It's like if you only freeroam without ever getting a "real" loadscreen, the FPS drops after a while.

Or maybe it's just subjective. I don't know but i also noticed these 10-15 FPS after a while. Sometimes it happens and sometimes not. There is some sort of memory leak and i think fast travelling sort of "flushes" that. "Waiting" or sleeping so fast forwarding time also seems to help.
