Iconic Weapons Useless?
Every Iconic weapon i find is weak as hell when looted. I am currently level 42 and using a modded overture that has 1300 dps+. I was really looking forward to Johnny's gun and bam.... the thing does a third of the damage my Overture does. To upgrade to a decent level i would be looking to DUMP a massive amount of upgrade materials and money.

Lots of the inconic weapons are amazing and cool but they seems utterly weak when compared to the stuff you can buy in the stores or loot randomly. Am i missing something? Is there a way to keep these things up to date that doesnt involve a trillion credits?

You'll get some of them with little effort like Dying Light, Kongou, Widow Maker, Overwatch, Skippy (which actually can't be upgraded, just scales with you), etc. But if you want them to remain relevant in the late game you need to Craft them up a rarity tier from what they start as and you need to Upgrade them.

Lol no. Iconic weapons can be upgraded to legendary version. With that they become OP with their additional perk. Any other stat is similar to same family weapon.
So 43 lvl legendary weapon will have similar stats like dmg crit etc. as same gun on same level bought from vendor. But with addional perk. Only downside is that you need to upgrade it to keep it on same level as guns you find. But if you use one gun, two guns like me, both iconic and you have crafting, then you are able to make them higher level than guns you find i store or as loot

True they are kinda fail when you find them at start of the game but you need the Tech skill 20 and crafting 20 to make them really game breaking good weapons.

The problem is like you said they drop at ridiculous low levels. Which make the investment to bring them up to snuff massive. The example i gave between Johnny’s gun and the one i use. There is a around 20 levels of power gap between them despite both being legendaries. I think they should at least drop at your level.

You're not supposed to Upgrade them, you're supposed to recraft them. Much more cost effective. But you will need lvl 20 tech for the final recraft to legendary

This is a common mistake. Since as soon as you get a gun the next level for it is unlocked in your crafting menu (without having to buy the perk!), so people assume later on when they get the materials and buy the perk they can just craft the next rarity level no issue. Sadly you have to look closely at it, because it requires an intact version of the previous rarity level as an ingredient.

19 of those are just great...
for display case on the wall in V's apartment.

Some of the iconic weapons are not that great. But if you craft the upgraded version and keep it upgraded some are far better than any other weapon. This is the legendary Comrade's Hammer nearly fully upgraded for my level at 36 with some proper perks.

Unfortunatelly, not all of the weapons go on the wall.
Here's the list:
Breakthough
Overwatch
Moron Labe
Psalm:11:6
Buzzsaw
Yinglong
Mox
The Headsman
Sovereign
La Chingona Dorada
Malorian Arms 3516
Plan B
Skippy
Archangel
Comrade's Hammer
Crash
Jinchu-maru
Satori
BA XING CHONG

Would be far more better, if we were able to choose what to display. Just by weapon type, for example.
