If you like Panam, then the best ending is the one where you escape with Aldecaldos.
If you don't like Panam, then the best ending is the one where you become a Legend.
If you absolutely love Johnny, then it's the Johnny ending.
(I do love how each ending was directed)
How is that a good ending when you safrifice yourself for a Terrorist?
“Don’t Fear the Reaper” is hands-down the most fun to play.
All the endings were really well done, though. Even the suicide ending was well thought-through and its end-credits sequence reveals much to our understanding of the depths of the relationships V has made in such a short span of time.
After further reflection, I think that’s my answer for “best” ending: all of them, collectively. It’s a bit of a cheat, yes, but every ending has its own unique contribution to our understanding of the story and lore. Each ending is emotionally moving with elements that are both unsettling and satisfying at the same time.
For me, it's the one that's out-of-tune with the game: The Sun. V wins the dream still with hope of a cure. V's a legend just like Jackie wanted. Nibbles is a pub cat. All romances earned remain available even if they left NC (as seen during credits). If succeeding the (Don't Fear) The Reaper mission, allies who were alive before that mission are still alive after that mission. Some collected H10 items are featured at the start of Path of Glory. There's a flyby of V's H10 apartment. V's living in the penthouse that was always visible from the H10 apartment window even in bad weather. Goro, the Corpo, (if alive) suggests he's going to kill himself. Reed (if Songbird ended up with the NUSA) will be confused at the choice.
It's so perfect that it's more like the fever dream of someone who's dying than "real" (in terms of the game). I'll always take the gamble at the Suicide ending (which is the result of the Easy Way Out on the rooftop or failing (DF)TR) just for this perfect ending.
The appropriate endings to me are Star, Temperance, and Tower (in that order of most to least). The remaining aren't even on my scale of endings.
(Horrible song: (Don't Fear) The Reaper (1976-Blue Öyster Cult). Just as bad as Suicide is Painless (1970-Mandel/Altman) or Angel (1997-Sara MacLachlan). Any song suggestion/promoting/interpreted as suicide being an answer to pain is a horrible song.)
But also, like, what in the actual ♥♥♥♥? Johnny is supposed to be all changed and nicer now, but he doesn't respond to let anybody know what happened to V? He just leaves them on read?! I don't get why the story ends, strongly implying all my loved ones never got any closure. Like, they're also hurt and annoyed that I'm not responding when considering my last conversations with a lot of them, it feels like "Oh V isn't answering my calls? I guess we weren't as good friends as I thought" seems...insane. Like the writing got changed at some point, like those calls were from a different ending where you disappeared *unexpectedly*.
