Alt Cunningham is the best character in the game.
Absolutely insanely scary, yet somehow you want to love her. Pure kino.

Alt is certainly central to the game's story, even though she only makes a few brief appearances. There's speculation that she could be an even bigger character in Orion, but of course anything is possible.

Honestly, Alt, Lilith, and Blackwalled Songbird; hell even So Mi struggling not to be overwhelmed if you side with her really show how hilariously outclassed in both tech and sheer power the cyberpunk physical world is to whatever has been created in the purely digital 'background' of the global Net.

I really like how we can feel that Alt was a human in its past and is actively making an effort to be approachable to V(and johnny) despite being far beyond what is presented to us. Alt knew exactly what to do and say to get us to help it reach Mikoshi, yet went out of its way to remind us of these facts constantly so it was always ours(V's) choice in the end.

I also just enjoy the digital ghost design where we explicitly can't see Alt's face (because it doesn't have one anymore).

"Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question …
Oh, do not ask, "What is it?"
Let us go and make our visit."

Reminds me of Wintermute explaining how it has to "gear itself down" via the personas of real people to properly communicate with humans in Neuromancer (and even then failing to explain why it does what it does). An interesting theme that's touched on in several great pieces of scifi (Solaris and the intelligent ocean covering an entire planet, for example) - what the actual hell motivates something that is so utterly, completely alien that we can't even use common biology/evolution as a frame of reference? "Cogito, ergo sum" doesn't really fill in a lot of blanks by itself, does it?
