I've found other discoveries/items/quests, hidden in the backstreets n stuff while doing them too..
Totally worth doing them...
But that also depends on how deep you want to sink into this game's immersive world building qualities. If you're the type who only wants to run what's on the surface level of the game, then most of these side gigs and hustles might seem superficial to you.
Since I ended up really getting into this game, you could say I obsessively tried looking for as many side gigs as I could, even after completing all of them (there are some hidden biz's throughout).
They gave me a ton of world building elements that helped me understand and appreciate the muddy cyber bowl I was in. They add weight of significance to the main mission.
But again, this solely depends on how you absorb the content. If you feel they do nothing, then they won't serve any purpose for you, outside of superficial looting.
You asked if some of them are keys to the overall story. In some aspects, yes, very much so.
Especially in regards to corporate wars and the whole nasty conspiracy thing behind Biotechnica and a particular regional director of tech there, just to list a couple of examples.
All the jargan you'll hear from some main characters in your quest line, will make more sense and thus you'll feel the weight of these interactions.
Take for example, a certain nomad having a debate with other nomads over a collab with a certain corporation. If you pay attention to certain fixer gigs, NCPD hustles, etc, (read shards and terminals) you will find the scene more meaningful and it may persuade you to make a certain choice of dialogue later in the game over a matter relating to it.
So that's why I say, yes. But as we a see in this community from time to time, some people just zip right through these things and won't read a word past descriptions and subject matters.
Hope this helps.
If you are not enjoying them, then dont. Just be aware that these side activities are a major portion of the game's content.
Outside of general world building they don't really connect to the main story. If you're a player who isn't interested in the game content unrelated to the story, you can skip them. However, they're the largest source of XP outside story missions and not doing them might leave you under-leveled.
Just wish the nomads had strapped some guns to theirs.
You just aren't going to notice the connections and links if you are blindly treating it as a checklist to go through.
Wakako for instance gives you one of the best katanas in the game.
One thing I'm not sure was mentioned is that for pretty much all of the "kill this guy" quests they have minor alternate endings if you manage to take them alive instead. Complete with new voice lines from the fixer for doing so.
For instance there is a number of of Netrunners you meet in sidegigs that can choose to have help you in tracking Songbird later on , maybe, depending on how you end things
The issue is that reaching level 50 isn't difficult at all to achieve and you'll reach that easily by doing even half of the side content, the game can be pretty boring at max level as everything just dies super fast.
