That said there are clothing items out there that do have practical effects, with a lot more options if you have the PL DLC.
Every clothing slot except the legs and feet can at least one type of item that comes with stat booting effect of some sort.

You can check your character stats to see the buffs applied to your armor, etc.
Everything else I break down for components to help me level up my iconic weapons or add better tier cyberwares.
But no, once its in your inventory it is a permanent option in your wardrobe. Whether you like it or not.
The only exception is items with some sort of practical use, where it will only be that items appearance this is in the wardrobe and not it's effect unless it is physically on your person. So it's possible some of those may be worth keeping in the stash.
Gas mask, body armor, outdated Arasaka combat helmet, and Sir Phalstaff (that iconic...club....you get from the Militech corpo who evidently sports the ladies' edition of "Mr. Stud" cyberware)....my friend, I wasn't looking for an excuse to do a melee playthrough, but that'll do.
[edit] Shame you can't dual-wield because Phalstaff has a litte brother iconic, too. Can't remember where it is, but some crazy guy on a cliff.
