Either way, remember to disable the vertical/horizontal delay in advanced controller options, the setting make no sense and if you zero both parameters the controller is much more responsive.
You can and it's typically suggested to do so as vehicles in this game handle a bit wonky, especially when trying to drive on KB.

Driving is another topic. Driving with binary controlls (in general) is a bit... difficulty, at least if you want to have a minimum of driving physics in the game.
I tried to do that with a controler, but the switching back and forth anoyed me.
Ultimately I got myself an analog keyboard, this way I can at least control how much power I want, which is pretty helpfull if you drive a 1000hp rwd car.
