How is the DLC played?
Is it accessible anytime during the regular campaign? Is it something you do after the campaign? Is it a separate entity? Debating whether or not to buy just the game or both the game with the DLC.

TY in advance

You get it after you finish a certain mission, after that you will get a phone call. Phantom Liberty is like one big side quest line with many different missions, in between missions you can do what you want.

The dlc adds in something called relic pts so you can customize more about what you can do and the story is a decent spy thriller. You can start after the campaign but its definately good to do asap as it adds a lot of fun stuff for each type of playstyle. I am doing a new playthrough so i cant tell you when you can start it but i dont think you have to beat the game first to unlock it. From the little bit i did play on my last char it was fun and the only reason I started new and over was due to me using mods and my game got unstable so I removed them all for a fresh run.

After you finish Pacifica you can access the DLC. That's what i also suggest you to do as having the Relic Perks enhances more V and makes the main campaign more enjoyable

If you played witcher 3 blood and wine its basically that size of a dlc where it adds in enough stuff and story elements to make it worth the purchase imo

Get em both during the sale. You will want the dlc because the main game is so good and somehow the dlc manages to be even better.

But finish the main game before starting the dlc because the dlc gives you alternate endings.
There is something called, the point of no return, where the game is auto saved before you continue. That save point allows you to try the games different endings and is also a perfect time to begin the dlc.

Finish Pacifica means to do the main quest called Transmission. You do not have to start it at that point, I think you'll get more out of it if you wait but thats entirely your choice.

Yeah, I'd agree. No spoilers ahead: You can do the first part that introduces the new characters and sets up the story if you want (there's a natural break there), but I wouldn't go further without at least finishing your love interest's personal quests at the very least.

Question about the Phantom Liberty Expansion
Does it change the game from the beginning or is it something that gets unlocked at some point and is separate?

So is there anything wrong with just playing the base game and getting the expansion later?

PL unlocks after you complete the Voodoo Boys storyline in the main game. At that point you can play PL or you can continue on in the main game & play PL whenever you want.

Sure, if you want to complete the base game & get/play PL after that's perfectly OK.

I finished the game proper before playing PL first time around, this time around I'm about to do PL & I'm bit more than halfway through the main game.

During the DLC intro missions you get a new skill tree, or 'relics' that changes gameplay in all areas of the game, making it more interesting perhaps, if you like those relic skills.

The DLC area also has vendors with interesting things, including unique consumables and various one-time stat- and skill boosters and other things.

I find the DLC area (Dogtown) to be a bit darker and 'wilder', so to speak, so I prefer to do the DLC gigs, jobs and missions sporadically in between the main game gigs and jobs. It's always a bit relieving for me to get out of Dogtown for a while to 'relax' in the friendlier(!) rest of the city.

By unlocking the DLC early on you also unlock repeatable jobs (steal cars, in short) that takes place all over Night City, with very good rewards.

You cant start the first quest to get the relic skills and then just get out btw, you have to play the missions until you get to the Lucretia My Reflection Mission, thats when youre able to progress through the main story and the dlc sidequests freely without getting locked out of the main dlc and alot of the dlc sidequests

The DLC begins after a certain point in the MSQ via a mysterious phone call, hard to miss.

"Is it something you do after the campaign?"
Once you get the quest to begin the DLC, you can do it anytime you want. You can do it immediately, the moment you get to the "point of no return" in the MSQ, or even never.

"Is it a separate entity?"
It is a side story to the MSQ that takes place in the new area the DLC introduces, but it does open up two new endings for the MSQ if you finish it so it could serve as an alternative storyline to the MSQ if you go that route.

None whatsoever but PL does add a lot and is very good in its own right, its also set inside the vanilla game, its not like it follows on after you finish the vanilla game.
