if we ever lived in this sub-culture and time, we most likely give up our healthy limbs for chrome, as if like getting a tattoo. its crazy

Only if I lost a limb or eye sight or such and even then I would hesitate. Just going to a ripperdoc poses massive risks (as in, the doc forgot to remove some soaking tissue from your stomach). In general, even in our times, going to a doctor is a risk, since, as they themselves admit, most doctors go in to the field for prestige and money, not out of some idealistic ideals. So you go to a ripperdoc and this doc was high and drunk throughout the night and he messes up, causing permanent injury to you.

The Deus Ex series handled "chrome" in much more detail and it was a central theme in the games. If you'd get chromed, you'd have to take an expensive drug for the rest of your life. People, who could afford it, started to replace their limbs with artificial ones since it was a status symbol. But should they lose their fancy jobs or the economy tanks, they wouldn't be able to afford the medication. Also, while being on the top and buying the latest augmentation, you'd feel great. But several years later your chrome would be outdated and if you can't afford the newest versions, you're screwed, since fancy jobs want only the best and anyway, you're a mess since you can't afford the meds.

The whole chrome thing reminds me of smart phones in our time. People walking around like zombies, staring obliviously in to their screens. I loathe it. And once some sort of more advanced version of google glass is released and your eyes are connected to the internet all the time, it will be hell. As someone not addicted to smart phones, you'd essentially not be able to relate to people living in this fantasy world.

Only internal upgrades. Better heart, blood vessels, tendons, bones, organs, and maybe subdermal armor.

As far as limbs replacement? No, unless a limb is damaged to the point where it can't recover, which shouldn't be a issue due to the bones and tendons upgrade. I don't see a need for external chrome myself, besides, based on the lore of this game, you'd only be able to safely go with so much chrome.

Deus Ex is a case of people jumping to new tech too fast.

Literally wait for some more years and you can skip the whole metal cybernetics thing and jump straight to nanotech, no need for medication or limp-cutting.

i'd love to be able to just dash and double jump everywhere haha

I've always felt that replacing internal organs with cybernetics could be beneficial. If the technology exists, I'd want nanotech and or biotech concurrently. I'd prefer to have it all as unobvious as possible.

It all starts with "what you will replace" but ultimately ends with you not being able to find new job because implants are mandatory lol

I'd go the whole hog like Lizzy Wizzy.

I have implanted teeth, I had laser eye surgery, if there was a problem with my hearing, I'd go for an implanted hearing aid. If the need arose, I'd absolutely chrome up.
However, I wouldn't cut down my arm to have it replaced, even by superior chrome.
Zaku 17 kwietnia 2024 o 6:23
chrome me the ♥♥♥♥ up

they kind of cover it in the game but more so in the anime. But being stuck on using immunosuppressants for the rest of your life would kind of suck. It comes up in other things set in cyberpunk like settings. But look at it like IRL organ transplant but you never stabilize. It would also mean you would be more prone to getting sick as your immune system would be hammered all the time. Something like Covid would have a high chance of killing you.

So while yeah I would love to chrome out IRL I think it would suck and unless they can make me a brain in a box with a cool robot body I'm not on board.
i mean, its really no different than being on any other medication for the rest of your life, i have an artificial heartvalve, and since biologically made ones have a lifespan shorter than the rest of my life (am in my 20s) mine is made of carbon and tungsten, which means having to take meds for the rest of my life
not really all that much effort, i take a pill every evening, use a bloodtester similar to a diabetic every few days to make sure the value is where its supposed to be
only other difference is that i can now easily measure my pulse by listening for the clicking noises of the valve

main point: mechanical implants arent nearly as detrimental to your immunesystem than organ transplants from other humans, theres still limitations and issues, but your immunesystem doesnt suffer from it as all my pill does is slow down bloodclotting a bit so as not to have issues caused by the valve
also funfact: said medication uses the same active ingredient as (some) rat poison, just way less of it

The valve can move? And is your pulse that audible?

The value can change in body chemistry. That's why the blood testing. Value is not a misspelling.

Some artificial valves can make detectable noises that are easier to hear than biological heart valves.
