Ray Reconstruction with path tracing off?
Is it worth having on if you don't have path tracing? I've read that it can be buggy unless modded, and it should be working by itself at some point.

When I used it RR with Path Tracing, I noticed a increase in performance on my end. With it off, I lost a few fps numbers. Being on a 3060, I need all the performance that I can get when I use Path Tracing, so up to you.

Personally, I'd say that it's worth using it, but that's just my opinion.

What I meant to say is that I want to have path tracing off but have ray reconstruction on.

Ohhhhh. Unfortunately, not possible. It was possible at one point, when the ray reconstruction was initially added to the game, but I guess that that option got patched out.

Strange. I did some before and afters of having ray reconstruction on w/o path tracing. I ended up liking having it on because I saw more details in the distance. But then I saw it can make things glitchy and wasn't sure to what extent.

Ray Reconstruction is related to DLSS, I believe. Can't select it if DLSS is off. It fills in 'missing' rays, just like DLSS itself fills in missing pixels, in a nutshell.

I used it for a while, and I use ray tracing, not path tracing (3070 Ti, rest of specs in profile). It's still available to select, so I don't think it has changed.

But I ended up turning it off, as it causes some weird effects, mainly on plain, uniform surfaces, for example some pavements, ceilings and walls. It's like the surface is 'flowing', or shimmering, like it's a liquid.

I also tried updating the dll-file I can't remember the name of now (from v3.5 which is in the game, to 3.7 released recently) as it was supposed to improve it, but this shimmering effect was still there, so for now I prefer to play without Ray Reconstruction.

It only works for me if I turn on path tracing, so it could be a bug on my part maybe. I always keep dlss enabled, so it's definitely not related to dlss being on for me.

edit:
Sheesh my spelling today haha.

There is no option to use reconstruction without path tracing (there may have been in the past I don't know). I believe there is or used to be a way to "hack" the config files or something to make it possible but it's not something directly offered by the game.

There certainly is. Maybe an update made it possible?

There certainly wasn't last I played two weeks ago! So maybe it's changed since then (or I didn't notice the option appear with the very last patch before then). Unless you've modded the game or fiddled with the configuration files.

(Also, maybe, it's possible given that I have a 4000 series that they don't offer the option independently of path tracing when you can use path tracing but that would be truly weird.)

They would've had to have modded the option back in. The code to turn it on and off in the user.json, has long since been removed.

edit:
re-commented due to your edit.

I’ve been playing the last month but only tried ray reconstruction on and path tracing off for last 3 days so not sure how long it was possible. I haven’t touched any of the files.

That's interesting and good to know. Maybe it was in the last patch. Will try next time I have the game installed (will save on energy!!).

Regarding the possibility to use Ray Reconstruction when not using using Path Tracing, it has been available for me since I started playing, which was after patch 2.1. I used it from the start, but only recently turned it off when I discovered that it was the cause of the 'shimmering' effect I mentioned above.

This is from my settings screen now:

I noticed that when I enable Path Tracing (which is too demanding for my card, but just to try), Ray Reconstruction is automatically enabled (set to 'On') by the game, but it can be turned off again. But it might indicate it's better suited for Path Tracing.
