Can you play a good guy throughout the game?
I know lots of people want to play evil characters but I really like the hero type role, can you play a good guy and be the hero in this game. Dues Ex is my favorite game of all time along with the other games in the series just so you know the type of game I like. tks for any info

Yes you totally can be a hero.

That depends on your definition of a hero play... In the game you are a merc who is sometimes hired to do theft of set people up with something. There are also quests where you don't really have a clear "good" answer, but more like - do you ruin this person's life or that person's life?
But overall sure, you can make plenty of "good" decisions and I would say it is a bit more "hero" oriented. But in general it's just you are a guy who does anything to look out for yourself
You’re a career mercenary as V. You would do anything as long as there’s a paycheck at the end of the day.

Your main sources of income are gigs (crimes), looting (crime), hacking ATM terminals (crime) and selling (stolen) cyberware and gear (crime).

Sure you can on occasion help the police earn some cash that way but you are definitely no hero or paragon of virtue as V.
You can certainly try. On most occasions you can play the hero pretty straight, but there will be some situations that will challenge your morality and question what is right.

The police are usually on a righteous side, but corruption runs deep. The police scanner will lead you where you can help, but be wary in randomly jumping into shoot-outs. Bullets can ricochet and police can mistake you as just another perp if you do.

There are many non-lethal ways to take down your opponents, but a non-lethal weapon can be difficult to acquire at the early levels.

Even if you do that, the best you can considered is an antihero or vigilante like The Punisher.

Still not a “good guy” and pretty far from a “hero”. V is just trying to survive really. That’s all. No time for heroics and villainy.

Hmmm.... it depends on your Definition and boundaries of "Justice".
Night City is a rather .... fluid .... City regarding whats good and what is evil.
I would go as far as rephrasing "Die a Hero or live long enough to become the Villian".

I did all the gig's that allowed you to put the NPC in the trunk for the fixer instead of killing them, and there at least 6 or more you can put in the car trunks

I try to play that way, completing missions without having to kill everyone, but keep in mind that in many missions there are no "good" or "bad" decisions, they all have good AND bad consequences. I once overheard an NPC guard's dialogue in a mission, he was talking about how he miss his wife and daughter, and I thought "the guy's just doing his job, he's not necessarily "bad" or "good", so from there on I try not to kill unnecessarily if there's another way to get the job done. There's a quick hack combo that works really well, using Sonic Shock after Memory Wipe and Reboot Optics (no matter the tier) will cause them to lose consciousness, so it's not lethal, and it's the one I use the most. In "assassination" missions, I prefer to non-lethally incapacitate the target, but then I have to get them to a vehicle provided by the fixer, and let them do whatever they want, in the end I think that the one who imposes the sentence is the one who should carry it out, it's cowardly to let someone else do it. I've even found this to be a more challenging way of gameplay.

This is actually one of my annoyances with the game - unclear direction. In some quests, you are a hardcore merc just doing the work, in others a 'goody 2 shoes' - very much a tonal shift; enough to be slightly discordant. I prefer to play a good guy, but .. some missions really feel like you're playing a different character/setting.

In general, though, you have more than one choice of ways to solve every mission. Part of what's really great with the game, really. :)

Ya that is what I'm hearing and reading online. Wish they would have made it possible to play the "good guy" during the game. Not a fan of being a bad guy in games but that's just me.
