game doesn't bother to explain hacking properly
you get one really fast and basic tutorial on how how hacking (or as it's called jacking) works and if you didn't understand it immediately, good luck...

Do a quicksave before starting the hack. Plan out your sequence before you start...the timer doesn't start until you click the first number. Note that until you upgrade your cyberdeck in the early game you almost certainly aren't going to solve the whole puzzle, so don't delay upgrading it. Note that each sequence gives you different things, so solve for cash, cash and components, or cash, components and actual quickhacks. If you totally goof up, you can Escape out and try again. There's a Perk in Intelligence that shortens the sequences for you...makes them easy to solve. If all else fails, reload your quicksave and try again.

Part of the game is figuring this stuff out. You'll get better with practice.

1: It will start with the first (top) horizontal bar 'active'. When you click, the active bar will switch to the vertical where you clicked.
2: It will alternate between horizontal and vertical with each click.
3: Thus, you will always know what numbers will be available to click next.
4: You have a field of brackets towards the top/right. This is the amount of clicks you have available, and what you've clicked so far is displayed.
5: You have 1-4 lines of numbers below that. This is the combinations you need to get.
6: Let's say it says '1C' 'BD' 'FF'. You need to click 1C, then BD, then FF. Clicking anything else resets the line.
7: Let's say you have to lines: One saying '1C' 'BD' and another saying 'BD' 'FF'. If you click 1C, BD, FF, you solve both.
8: When a line is solved it can't be messed up.
9: Look towards ways to solve more than one line at a time. Worst case you have to spend clicks to make a number available.
10: Note what each line unlocks. They don't stack. If you get components, that's all the components you can get from that hack, for instance. (I don't know if eddies is an exception to that.).

I think that's basically it.

the more you progress, the less benefit it provides -- your deck can only hold so many quickhacks, mine is full of level 5

You can collect 17 Tier 5 quickhacks and equip them as needed. You can sell any excess, and data panels still provide E$. It's true that after a while you probably don't need the money or quickhacks or components, but until you get there, those panels are important and valuable.
