What does choom mean?

It was discussed in another thread as well, where I commented that it reminded me a bit of the word 'tjommy' that we use as slang in Norway as well, meaning the same (pal, buddy), although it was mainly used a few decades ago (I'm getting old).

It's a bit similar, and that thread showed that many of the 'new words' in Cyberpunk has similarities with words from many languages, with more or less the same meaning.


For example 'preem!' in the game means good!, great!, very nice! or similar. We use 'prima!' (prounounced 'preem-ah') for the same meaning (although that was also mainly used earlier).

Usually used as a word that is interchangeable with buddy or chump. You will hear it in reference to friends and deadbeats alike.

I always assumed preem was just short for premium; something that exudes greater value on account of being newer or of higher quality. I have yet to hear it in a context that made me question this assumption.

That's why originally 'choomba' is masculine and 'choombata' is feminine.

Someone on twatter (back before it was X) was getting buthurt over it, calling them (the creators of the tabletop) racist suggesting they just wanted an 'n word' replacement or swap, so they could go around being all gangsta about stuff.
Claiming 'cultural appropriation' over the use of the slang.

They got shot down quite quickly when it was pointed out that the creator of Cyberpunk, Mr Mike Pondsmith.... Is a black African American man.

Think he said he wanted a slang word with more friendly and family connections that anyone could use.
Also helps that 'choom', 'choomba' and 'choombata' have been around in the tabletop since 1988 when the game first dropped, tho it's changed slightly.
Like 'input' and 'output' have swapped around. The input used to be for women and output used to be for men.
(Figured it was that 'you put it in to the women, and guys have to pay out to get dates' lol)
Now, the output is the woman, the input is the guy.
(American word for a power socket is an 'outlet' so I figured they swapped to that as an outlet has holes.. and guys put stuff in lol. Both versions make sense)

They removed the gendered language for choom/choomba/choombata with the Edgerunners mission kit, saying it was choombata first, then shortened to choomba and finally shortened to just choom.
