Just got the game and its really good, why upon release did many say it was not good? Has the game been improved since release?
I remember reading about this game upon release and if I remember correctly, it had lots of bad reviews.

Many people said it was boring and nothing to do.

Has the game been improved since then, or did I just happen to read only negative comments?

A lot of people bought into hype that never materialized. If you don't compare it to its own hype then it's a decent game.

Some games do certain things way better, like NPCs or world interaction, but we're talking about games which are the best at those things. Some people seem to expect games to be the best at every aspect every time which is just not realistic.

Because this game was never meant to be on PS4 and Xbox1. Those consoles simply weren't powerful enough to run the game. It was a huge mistake to release the game on those consoles.
I played at lunch on a GTX 1060 PC on medium settings. I didn't run into many bugs and the game played well enough that it was enjoyable.
Now I play with a RTX 2060 PC on Ultra settings with some Ray Tracing and get 60ish FPS.
The game also runs on my steamdeck with the steamdeck preset setting.

theres lots to do with "gigs" or side quests...im 55 hrs on my first play through, and probably another 30+ hrs of gameplay left to do...

The game has really improved yes. It was a shameful mess at release.

to be fair alot of people didnt buy into the hype about the franchise itself alot of people liked the table top series, its the fact the cdpr was forced to release a game that was clearly not ready for prime time after countless death threats, so the game we got wasnt the one that was promised.

the game was announced during the life cycle of the ps4/xbox one year optimisation plays a big factor, just because the consoles used a apu/cpu that got amd sued doesnt mean cdpr couldnt optimised the game to run on them,
i ran the game on a intel core i3 7100 with a config file i modded to make it unstable 60fps like the day one 1.0 version on consoles. where its highs of 45 fps and lows of 2fps even on a ps4,

optimising a game for said platform is not hard, but its hard when people push death threats instead of being patient.

Empty threats from the interzones didn't force their hand. It was either their shareholders, or the Polish Government that forced the release.

Or both. Woulden't rule out both.

It was a long journey from 1.0 to 2.2 but the folks who suffered the most were people who played CP on a PS3 and PS4.
I remember that the PC release wasnt that bad. Sure, a ton of bugs and glitches but most of the time, nothing/minor gamebreaking bugs for the PC release.
TW3 was way more stable than Cyberpunk after release.

I mean some of the bugs are still a big part of CP today like NPCs going crazy, floating objects, your car spawning onto other cars, exploding cars, police going crazy, exploding inventory when you pick up shards or items, and so on.

But the lore and graphics make up for it. I know its hard to believe, but they really do. Its a beautiful game and easily one of the top 5-10 games of all time and in my personal top 5.

Game was badly optimized and most people don't have powerful hardware.
I discovered CP at 2.0 with DLC on a 7900XT.
Some popping, some bugs, but best game i ever played.

It was buggy but still playing with the old flying car mod was the most fun ive ever had gaming

When it first came out it was buggy to the point of near unplayability. One noted one I recall hearing of was on calling for your car, it would spawn on top of you, killing you. It was delisted at one point and refunds were issued, no questions asked.
Since the game has been massively overhauled and the studio launched a massive PR blitz, complete with an anime series, to resurrect it, to great success.

'why upon release did many say it was not good?'

You know what 'gamers' are like ;-))

Those with mid-low range hardware experienced a multitude of bugs and some of them gamebreakng, most of those bound to low fps (CDPR reported those experiencing bugs where the system unable to reach 60 fps) , while those with high end systems were able to play it with minor bugs and annoyances.
As you can imagine, 80% of the playerbase barely know how to turn on the pc, and think they have a high end system when running a 1650 super on it, this lead to thousand of unhappy players not understanding the fault was the low fps not the game itself.

Me, and 3 of my friends had similar systems back then, all 4 of us with a 3080 and a 9900KF .. and all 4 of us finished the game the first week, with very minor bugs and nothing gamebreaking.

The game simply wasn't ready imo.

A lot of content was missing, however the stories were complete. Beyond story and gigs though, there wasn't much to this game at release. No minigames, no repeatable content aside from the rollercoaster, one club, and one apartment. Any things that would be repeatable fun, like the shooting gallery, street fights, or street races were one and done side quests that went bye bye after completing them.

Even to this day, the shooting gallery and street fighting are still one and done.

At least now though, there're some repeatable street races, two arcade minigames, more apartments, and more clubs. Not quite as much activity that I would've liked to have gotten in this game's world, but it's at least something.

What you're playing right now is like 100x of what there was during release. And that's just contentwise, the amount of bugs that were in this game upon release, can only be described by Keanu as "breathtaking".
