Personally I'd say that telling everyone their name was "V" was a smart choice .

Punk subculture was a semi-political movement started in the 1970s that stood for ideologies mostly concerned with individual freedom and anti-establishment views. Common punk viewpoints include individual liberty, anti-authoritarianism, a DIY ethic, non-conformity, anti-corporatism, anti-government, direct action, and not "selling out".
To most of the world however they were basically just a bunch of people in leather jackets with mohawks who liked listening to a loud, aggressive genre of rock music called (no shock here) punk rock.

The word "cyberpunk" was coined by writer Bruce Bethke, who wrote a story with that title in 1980. He created the term by combining "cybernetics," the science of replacing human functions with computerized ones, and "punk," the raucous music and nihilistic sensibility that became a youth culture in the 1970s and '80s.
