It makes the whole odd-couple pairing of V and Johnny that much more ironic and amusing that of all the people who's skulls he could have landed in, Johnny lands in a former Arasaka troubleshooter. And you can believably play it either way...
The man who saw the worst of Corpo life from within and now wants to help Johnny tear it all down...
Or the man who recognizes the cold hard bitter reality of it being a dog-eat-dog system and he wants back into that system, so he can become the Alpha dog.
Exactly! I actually wish that they explored this even more, but that would have been at the expense of the other origin stories, I would assume. There's a lot of baggage between the two of them that would have been amusing to dive into.
But there's definitely legit complaints and lack of Lifepath-unique branches in quests and dialogue is among my top 3. Lack of third person mode, and lack of immersive/QOL features promised(Player Houses, Car/House/Cyberware customization/Rideable trains, etc) are my main ones.
That said, still better than most other games in the genre. WAY smoother launch than any Bethesda game ever gave me. And i'm confident most or all of those features will be put back in eventually. Maybe not third person though....sigh. they should never have wasted so much time and resources on pandering to last gen holdouts. That's why we didn't get the full experience we should have.
But yeah, a little more acknowledgment from Johnny that he somehow landed in the head of a freakin' Arasaka agent would have been MARVELOUS. And hilarious. And if they could end up friends in spite of that at the end...it would have been heartwarming.
the only thing i'll say in favor of Nomad is that it does put a new spin on the Panam-relationship...the only relationship in the game worth a damn. But I wouldn't say it makes the Panam relationship better. Just different.
If anything once again there's so much more gravity in the idea of Corpo V choosing to leave everything behind and become a Nomad than there is in the Nomad....just continuing to be a Nomad.
That's a hell of a journey, from Corporate troubleshooter climbing up the ladder of elite success to...a nice cool evening around the camp fire with your tribe and your woman. That's a real story arc there. That's character development.
Meredith Stoudt could have been ALOT more interesting if she had been a full fledged romance and not just a one night stand. Especially for a Corpo V. Shame that wasn't more fleshed out too.
Nomad lifepath would have benefited greatly from more interactions with the Backers. To really flesh out what went wrong there. There's a datapad you find in the game that gives a broad stroke explanation of how the Backers fell apart but it would have benefited greatly from Nomad V being able to really talk about it with other Ex-Backers.
Corpo V: Charter Hill is a relatively new and well maintained corporate district that was built from scratch during the Rebuilding period. It quickly became very popular among the upper class of Night City, this was before North Oak became hot within the next two decades.
Corpo V was raised in Charter Hill according to the lore! They leave it up to our imagination to determine how he and Jackie know each other. I wish there was more information on it. I like the idea that V has a streetkid parent and a corpo parent, making him a mash between the two.
But it's still left vague enough that you could say they knew each other before the job.
That's how I envision them. You all remember that quest with the food vendor who's sister went Corpo-rat and her delinquent friends are now constantly harassing him over it?
I see that as sort of what happened with Corp-V.
Like that vendor's sister, somewhere along the way V wanted more out of his life. He grew up in the streets of Night City, where he befriended Jackie. Eventually he managed to get noticed and get hired by Arasaka. And though most of his old friends turned their backs on him as a sellout Jackie didn't.
Or maybe Jackie sort of distanced himself and then that aforementioned job reunited them and rekindled their friendship. Jackie may not like Corpo-rats in general but that job proved to him that V was still a standup guy who could be counted on. And it doesn't hurt to be friendly with one of the few trustworthy Corpo-rats in the city, right?
And V was glad to have that ONE person in his life who wasn't trying to take his job, or screw him on a deal, or make him look bad in front of the boss. An odd couple friendship for sure, but a real friendship. And any doubt that it was real vanished when Jackie made it clear he was willing to go one-on-two with two Arasaka agents right there on the spot for his Choom.
Jackie/SK-V starts with Jackie screwing V. Six months later it's over. Whatevs.
Jackie/N-V starts with Jackie intending to screw V. Six months later it's over. Whatevs.
Only Jackie/C-V is a true friendship from start to tragic end. C-V is the only one Jackie helps when there's nothing in it for him. Which just makes Jackie that much cooler.
True, but there is that side quest that you can only trigger the correct ending for by being a streetkid.
The game is like: here is your best friend. I am like: ok. Few minutes later game tells you: Jackie died. And I am like: I don't give a damn. T-Bug was treated by the story writers even worse. If they wanted player to feel something after their death they definitely needed to make a better job on bonding the player with the characters. Imagine if in the very first Witcher Triss died during the Kaer Morhen attack, would you give a damn about it even game probably would say I should...
Honestly Dex has much better introduction and the impact than Bug, Jackie and his mother combined.
PS: If you take a nomad ending the best background is the nomad path since you kinda have a whole character arc: you are starting the game by loosing your "family", broken and aimless you smuggle something into the Night City and become a petty criminal and then during the game you are finding a new "family", you are helping them during their rough times, they are helping you as well when you need it and then you are smuggling a basilisk for them out of Night City and you are all driving into the sunset.
