Are Smart Weapons Overpowered?
Am I the only one who finds the smart weapons a bit OP?

Background: I am 20th level focusing on map exploration more than quests but I have cleared out a lot of NCPD contracts. I have a sort of netrunner stealth tech build, no Body or Reflex. Anyway, I found early game combat challenging and I wanted to focus on netrunning bc I thought it was cool, but the direct damage attacks were so overwhelming even on max difficulty (especially since you could eliminate opponents from the shadows 2 blocks away) I stopped myself from doing that so I wouldn't get bored. Then I switched to covert takedowns or direct fire scenarios and good enough.

In my firefights I started experimenting with smart weapons and while I'm not invincible (Max Difficulty), they do seem to make combat ridiculously easier compared to not using them. wo Smart Weapons, I died for the first time in 40 hours. Repeatedly. I went back to smart weapons and while it was a real fight, it wasn't that challenging. I experimented (same enemies) over and over again and reliably Smart Weapons meant full auto, head crits, whereas non-smart weapons I very likely could die.

So, is it just me or are Smart Weapons (like Quick Hacks) OP? I just don't see any drawback to using them. I feel like they should have less ammo in each clip or cause a lot less damage or something. They do cause less damage but not enough to compensate for autocrits. That's another way to nerf them, no crits.

Thoughts?

Shingen Mk5 says hi. I absolutely love it. Favourite weapon in the game, probably closely followed by the Zhuo shotgun for similar hilariousness. On the former, I max out combat amplifiers and put a legendary short circuit on it. It usually kills anything except boss-level enemies in a 3-round burst, and if it hasn't by then, there's a 75% chance they're on fire. With the shotgun, apply the similar principle to maxing out the crit chance, again with legendary short circuit. Fired at a single target, you're almost guaranteed to get a proc. Just to be ultra-silly, you get Fingers' special ankles and just at them from the air. With System-Ex on, you can combine that with a Sandevistan and the entire encounter is dead before you've landed and reloaded.

It's funny how little I have seen of this game's potential even with as many hours I have in it, lol.

The only one I ever really play around with a lot is Skippy. I seem to run low on ammo with other smart guns pretty fast. I prefer to keep my inferno upgraded and then I just put a burst in a target and let them burn to death while I hide behind cover...tougher enemies might need a second burst.

burn is pretty good as in a lot of enemies have that weakness. your robots and maelstrom plus some others like them cyborgs? lightning; burn won't do much.

skippy is unique and you can upgrade him by using him to a extent but it does fire on its own when aiming sometimes. he has a kill mode that aims for the head and works pretty well.

i got a yellow smart shotgun and feel like god. shotguns in genreral are pretty op with skill tree, but the Smart shotgun is insane accuracy

Yes, if utilized properly you can stay behind cover 100% of the time making it impossible for enemies to shoot you.

When I started playing this game I thought Smart weapons were absolutely the best. Now I regard them as being relatively weak [except for the Ashura rifle, which is amazing]. Now I prefer the Power [ricochet power!] and Tech weapons [shoots throiugh cover!].

Each weapon type requires some study to use to its greatest potential. I find the Smart weapons are great for some things, but often take so long to kill one enemy that his pals will shoot me in the meantime.

No. :)

They all do less damage than their non-smart counterparts, and many of the enemies (after a certain point) have cyberware which interferes with smart weapons. (Yes, they can dodge them, contrary to what's above)
Ex: tiger Claws are immune to smart Weapons since they use them themselves.

If you are being shot with a smart weapon that means you are using it incorrectly.

Here's proper Smart Weapon Technique

still loving these comments.

I especially didn't notice how little damage the smart weapons cause versus other weapons and the way they go through ammo (then again I'm such a bad shot generally, I probably burn through similar ammo with other weapons without actually taking anyone down lol). I also got a smart weapon sniper rifle which was hilarious, but took like 5 minutes to load, so I felt that was kinda balanced.

Anyway, thanks again for all this great feedback!

Just get the Fenrir....best SMG hands down and burn the whole city to a crisp.

Smart weapons are kinda ass, takes to long to kill enemies or you need to get to close to them, in my opinion the widow maker is the best weapon, if you want easy mode just ping something whereby you can see all the enemies and with the widow maker you can wallbang everything through the whole building, ofc it depends on the mission.

If you want to have a challenge go for stealthy gameplay with silencer with you revolver of choice but to be honest at a certain everything becomes so op. V is just the most broken character in NC.

This isn't about Smart Weapons, but it's the build I'm currently using. I pulled it from a Youtube comment for my Sandevistan build.

"Any melee build works best for Sandevistan. You can move fast while the Sandy is active but the guns fire at normal speed, so you can often get more done with melee before your time expires. As others mentioned, you will lose time with Mantis blades if you trigger executions so best to leave them unless you have the non-lethal kiroshi mod.

Pro tip for Sandevistan build: Increase your tech ability to 18 for legendary crafting. Once you reach 15 Reflexes, you can purchase the Qiant Sandevistan Mk.4 (Slow to 25%, 12 sec duration, 15 sec cooldown) from Fingers in Japantown. Then buy the Sandevistan Heatsink crafting spec from the Ripperdoc in Arroyo, build three legendary versions and equip them (they reduce your Sandevistan cool down by 4 seconds each). Your cool down for Sandevistan is 3 seconds.

If you also have 18 Body (and 43 street cred) you can buy legendary Bioconductors from the Aldecaldos Ripperdoc which reduces it a further 1 second.

If you get to 18 Reflexes, buy the epic Nanorelays from the Ripperdoc in Arroyo. This will extend your Sandevistan time by 2 seconds.

With all the above equipped, you can activate your Sandevistan to slow time to 25% for 14 seconds, 2 seconds cooldown, and then activate again." -Some Guy
