I am someone who spends time on multiple giveaway sources and keep track of them every day, I can confirm like everyone else, that no giveaway or promotional claim of the game was ever stated

Most common form of developers kindness, is free weekends, which allow users to play the game for free for a set time, but you don't have the game permanently and will be removed after the time is up, if you happen to buy the game during the free weekend period, the game will remain in tact and all progress saved NOTE: if you don't buy the game yet and end up not deleting said files on your PC, then buy it at a later date, that progress will remain assuming you didn't delete the files to have that progress disappear

Sometimes Steam hosts promotional means given by the developers to allow claiming games for free for a period of time, which in this case is permanent claims, but this game hasn't had one of those before

It's likely it was a free weekend, maybe they won a key on some sort of raffle or giveaway stream could be likely
