Was that ever in the works, or was that a floating idea back in pre-release?
They scrapped the idea due to the state the game was released in & put their focus on fixing things up instead.
Neither.
The game was never going to have multiplayer ever. The multiplayer they discussed, before it was cancelled, was going to a separate product from this game meaning it would have had its own separate Steam storepage.
MP was scrapped because REDengine does not have any multiplayer functionality whatsoever and they realized midway during RnD that it would be easier to ditch their engine for Unreal (which already has MP functionality) than to develop multiplayer from the ground up.
The botched launch had nothing to do with it.
It's one of the reasons they are migrating new versions of cyberpunk and Witcher games to Unreal.
They wanted to add multiplayer to their single player games going forward but they realised the engine couldn't take it.
However.

There is hope for multiplayer via mods.
Just gotta wait for 'maintenance mode' where there are no more patches since every patch breaks something in mods lol.
Not every game is a live service with non-stop additions.
From my cursory search last night, they have 4 projects in total, two I mentioned. The other two are going to be singleplayer and multiplayer, one set in the witcher world and the other a new IP, so I'm assuming they took the scrapped plans from Cyberpunk and reusing those. Thanks to all the extra time they had to work on it, maybe it'll actually be functioning well when it comes out but we will see
it's multiplayer should be a lot easier to set up, because its going to use Unreal Engine rather than RED Engine.
they did say they wanted to add a multiplayer component to all their games going forward.
think seeing 'no co-op no buy' and constant 'where is my multiplayer' made them at least say 'we know you like to share. so even when a game is 1 player, we are going to do *something* multiplayer with them, even if it's seperate to the main game'
i just hope they stick to that part when it comes to 1 player games.
got no issues with adding a side game or seperate online game to the things. but it's nice to have something just single player....
(and i mean designed so 1 player can do everything in it, even if it takes multiple different single player playthru's rather than when you need to drag your mates in to let you finish the game)
