How do I neurtralize a enemy without breaking their gun?
Have come back to this game after a long absence......

And have been trying a lot of things, but it seems like when enemies are defeated, it is random whether their weapons are "broken" or not......

Is there something I am missing? How can I defeat a enemy so that I can take their weapon without worry of breaking it?

It's random. I've choked out enemies and their weapon would still break.
I think its a level restriction mechanic? Ive noticed that later in the game, probably only a few hours in even, it has stopped happening entirely.

Unless you're running a mod, you may think it's stopped happening, but it hasn't. It's more an cash control restriction. Because guns sell for a LOT and they decided rather than reducing that, guns would break instead. >.>

My prevailing theory is every level bracket which is actually every 5 levels not 10 has a loot pool with multiple tiers including the + tiers. There are probably about 5 tiers in the draw pool at once with the top tier having the least odds, and the bottom tier always being broken. So early game is so saturated with broken guns as their pool options are tier 1 and broken then tier 1+, tier 1, and broken. Not perfect, but it is a solid enough explanation.

The good news is enemy random drops hardly matter. Enemies are infinite. Vendors also sell guns. All Iconic weapons are fixed drops.

This is all part of the 'economy' of the game. In the old game (pre 2.0) early on, you would pick up a lot of weapons that were worth E$20, which was ridiculous. Now a lot of weapons break when they're dropped (and instantly become crafting materials) but intact weapons are worth E$600-700 right from the beginning of the game which is at least somewhat realistic.

Duilf is incorrect. Higher tier weapons are not the ones that break, they are just straight up not added to the loot pool until you reach level thresholds. There were reddit threads at the time of people data mining to try to figure it all out. Also why we know about how the cyberware capacity shard drops work.
